Italy produces excellent scientists, but most home-grown ERC grantees decide to work abroad
Female Italian scientists have increased their success rates in the latest round of European Research Council consolidator grants, winning 23 out of the total of 47 grants that went to Italy.
Overall, Italy won the most consolidator grants by nationality—but critics pointed out that just 17 of the winners would undertake their research at an Italian institution. This could be a sign of the modest attractiveness of Italian universities despite their ability to churn out excellent scientists—especially winning female candidates.
