Universities welcome Covid-19 funds for PhD programmes

Funding for AI and sustainability doctoral programmes announced as part of national recovery plan

Academics across Italy are hoping for better times ahead for PhD programmes, after funding for extra courses was announced as part of the country’s Covid-19 recovery plan.

The National Recovery and Resilience Plan will finance hundreds of extra doctoral students to take part in two programmes: one on artificial intelligence and the other on sustainability and climate change. The news was welcomed by participants in an online meeting of PhD students and academics—a follow-up to the first Italian national conference for PhDs, which was held at Università di Brescia in June 2019.
