Public professors and PhDs plummet in Italian universities

UnRest group hopes data on system can improve quality of debate about Italian higher education

A huge fall in the number professors and PhD students in Italian public universities between 2008 and 2020 was accompanied by growth in those employed by private sector institutions, according to a report from researchers trying to drive a more data-driven debate about higher education.

UnRest, a small group of researchers led by sociologist Marialuisa Stazio of University of Naples Federico II, says online universities also flourished during that period while the gender gap in teaching and research positions only improved slightly.
