Interview: A task for politics

Politicians play an important role in safeguarding integrity and open science. They should take the lead and embed independence in Dutch science policy, says Paul Diederen of the Rathenau Institute.

Asked how science can become more ingrained in the daily lives of Dutch people, Paul Diederen, research coordinator at the Rathenau Institute, has a clear answer: “This is a task for politics.” 

The institute provides policy advice. In the run-up to a consultation by the lower house of Parliament on science policy, the institute reported to Parliament on ways of strengthening the public value, integrity and independence of science.
