Dutch government launches fund to boost research and innovation

National Growth Fund welcomed but concerns raised about emphasis on strategic research and short-term growth

The Dutch government has launched a €20 billion National Growth Fund to increase spending on knowledge development, research, innovation and infrastructure over the next five years.

A committee of independent experts will assess the first round of preselected funding proposals in spring 2021, before advising ministers on which ones to fund. The proposals will be preselected according to eight criteria, including that each project must require at least €30 million.
