Rathenau calls for renewed focus on biosafety

             

Measures to ensure research remains “socially responsible” need to be reviewed, say science policy analysts

Safety protocols in the Netherlands intended to contain any risks posed by biotechnology are in danger of becoming out of date, a report has revealed.

The Rathenau Institute, a Dutch science policy think tank, published a document on 14 November highlighting the “increasing pressure” placed on mechanisms intended to guarantee safety in biotechnology research. The report noted that, since the 1970s, the Dutch government has been mainly responsible for ensuring safety in bioresearch—but that increasingly this role is being shifted back to the researchers.
