Dutch parliament supports foreign student cap

Motion asks minister to come up with law to limit numbers, as housing shortage bites

Netherlands parliament has voted for a cap on international students over fears that the country’s higher education institutions cannot cope with the growing numbers.

Dutch MP Peter Kwint announced on social media website Twitter on 29 November that a motion on the issue had passed. According to Kwint, the main arguments for a cap were that there is not enough housing to ensure all students find accommodation, and that Dutch students could potentially face disadvantages in a higher education system taught primarily in English.
