Minister wants more flexibility on cancelling student debt

Regulations could be updated to allow Dutch student finance service to make more tailored decisions

The Dutch science and education minister has published a proposal to improve legal backing for taking students’ specific situations into account if they are unlikely to be able to repay student loans.

In a letter to parliament, Robbert Dijkgraaf wrote that although existing regulations allow for loans to be cancelled in certain situations, many students and former students encounter financial troubles thanks to unforeseen circumstances that are not covered by the regulations.
