Minister tells researchers to engage more with the public

Swedish academics must challenge the public’s increasingly hostile attitude towards science

Matilda Ernkrans, Sweden’s higher education and research minister, has warned that scientists must address the general public’s lack of interest in research.

Speaking at a seminar in Stockholm on public perceptions of science, Ernkrans said that those working in higher education had a duty to communicate more effectively with the rest of society. The seminar was organised after a survey showed that researchers struggled to explain the importance of their work to laypeople.
