Norway proposes cuts to research budget

Funders alarmed over tax breaks for consumer products as academia’s belts tighten

Norway’s government has revealed that it wants to impose significant cuts to higher education and research in its budget plan for 2021.

The centre-right cabinet of prime minister Erna Solberg negotiated the agreement with the right-wing opposition Progress Party in order to ensure it is voted through the country’s parliament. The Progress Party’s leader Siv Jensen ratified the budget last week—further increasing so-called “debureaucratisation” cuts at universities and colleges.
