Threat of global infections looms large, but domestic cases also need attention, say disease experts

A group of 17 Swedish virologists have written an open letter calling for the government to plough more resources into virus research.

In the letter, published in Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, the researchers point to the coronavirus crisis as evidence that, as effective as pharmaceutical companies are at developing drugs against existing health conditions, they are unable to detect and deal with new viruses quickly. Without well-funded public health research, these viruses will spread across the world, they write—as is the case with the 2019-nCoV strain of coronavirus that has already claimed in excess of 500 lives.
