Danish PhD students concerned about public backlash

Study shows one-third refrain from taking part in debate to safeguard their work

A fear of negative public reaction makes 32 per cent of Danish PhD students hesitant to participate in public debates on topics related to their research, according to a study.

They survey, undertaken by Danish academics union Magisterforening and the PhD Association Network of Denmark (PAND), showed that many of the 1,500 students interviewed felt hesitant about sharing their views. Close to one-third said they would avoid debating their work in public, worrying they might have to face up to negative reactions.
