International panel to assess Swedish research profiles

External experts will support universities in finding and growing their most competitive science

Swedish funders will set up an international panel of experts to assess funding applications from universities seeking to expand their “strategic profile areas”, the government has revealed.

The panel is part of “a new model of quality-based resource allocation” developed as part of Sweden’s higher education and research policy bill, which came into effect in 2020. It will judge funding proposals over their contribution to a university’s so-called strategic profile areas—the research topics where an institution is most likely to produce results of the highest international quality.
