Danish maritime research is all at sea

With more than 400 islands and one of Europe’s longest coastlines, Denmark has a strong tradition in shipping and maritime industries. But recent lapses in related R&D funding mean researchers want more support from the government.

The importance of the sea to the Danish economy has not escaped the government, which is preparing a strategy to boost growth and create jobs in maritime industries. After all, companies such as container freight giant Maersk and the United Shipping and Trading Company account for 24 per cent of Denmark’s overall exports.
