Scientists reveal concerns over Italian stem cell therapy

Further details have emerged of scientists’ concerns over the safety and efficacy of a controversial stem cell therapy by the Italian company Stamina Foundation.

Nature reports that leaked documents about the treatment, which Stamina claimed had been successful in more than 80 patients, show that its benefits were overstated.

In October 2013, the Italian government withdrew €3 million of funding from the project after a government committee concluded that the treatment  had no scientific basis.
