Spain meets Cern payments

The Spanish cabinet has approved a payment of €31.5 million to meet its full 2015 membership bill for Cern.

The amount comes in additional to payments of €125m already made by the Spanish government to Cern in 2015. The additional €31.5m was needed because of a change of exchange rates between the euro and the Swiss france, which is the currency in which Cern contributions are calculated.

It is announcement on 4 December, the Ministry of Economic Competitiveness said the payment meant the country had now met a backlog of Cern payments dating back to 2011. Overall, the country has made €200m available to pay for participation in international scientific facilities, including the European Southern Observatory, it said.
