Academics oppose Hungarian ‘repression’

Five members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences have resigned in protest at the actions of Viktor Orbán’s government.

Nobel-prize winner Torsten Wiesel was one of five external members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences who resigned, citing the academy’s failure to confront “repressive policies” and “assaults on democracy” by Orbán’s government.

Another of the scientists, the Hungarian-born Stevan Harnad from the University of Southampton, wrote on the Hungarian Free Press website that the academy was "giving no sign of resisting Orban’s forced-march toward tyranny".
