Catalan election leaves universities in limbo

The pro-independence movement won Catalonia's regional elections yesterday, making it likely that university finances will continue to operate under government control.

Catalonia, in north-east Spain, went to polls on 21 December after Madrid took control of the Catalan government in October. The region declared independence that month following a referendum not approved by the Spanish government.

The three pro-independence parties kept their 2015 majority, winning a combined 70 seats in the 135-seat parliament. This is two more seats than the 68 needed to form a government.
