Italy gains ‘largest ever’ basic research budget

The Italian government has claimed to have created the country’s biggest ever fund for basic research, by combining money from two ministries and the Italian Technology Institute.

The research ministry and the ministry of foreign affairs have pooled their money with funding for the institute to create a national basic research budget of €391 million, the Research Italy information portal, which is supported by the research ministry, announced on 11 January. According to the portal, €250m of the money comes from the pool agreement.

The funding has already been ring-fenced in various ways. Life sciences research and physical, chemical and engineering research will each receive €140m, while the humanities will receive €111m. At the same time, €64m will be allocated to regions in southern Italy, while €22m will be reserved for researchers under the age of 40.
