The Spanish government has presented a plan it says will reform healthcare to protect people against pseudoscience and fight back against beliefs in practices such as acupuncture and homeopathy.
Under the plan, teaching of evidence-based medicine will be strengthened in universities, the government announced on 14 November. This will involve reinforcing ties between university managers, academics and professional associations.
Steps will also be taken to “eliminate pseudotherapies from health centres” and ensure that staff with officially recognised degrees provide all healthcare. Information channels tailored to specific groups, such as health professionals, scientific societies, the media and the public will be set up, and laws will be changed to ban advertising that makes misleading health claims.
