Anna Nilsson Vindefjärd, secretary-general of the lobby group Research Sweden, has called on the country’s coalition government to beef up spending on medical research in the upcoming budget bill.
Sweden’s minority government, formed by the social-democratic SAP party in January, is expected to present its first full budget this month. On 10 June, three government ministers agreed that Sweden should be a leading life science nation, while earlier this year it was announced that social affairs minister Lena Hallengren would lead a working group on developing improved health policy.
But in a statement on 4 September, Vindefjärd said: “Sweden faces a major challenge with increased costs and inequalities in healthcare. The increased care needs of an ageing population require extensive investment. But the issue seems almost absent in the parties’ negotiations ahead of the budget bill.” Vindefjärd’s organisation Research Sweden, a not-for-profit foundation, represents medical researchers, including those based at companies.
