Günther Oettinger criticised for ‘lending credibility to a regime…attacking the independence of science’

Former European Commission vice-president Günther Oettinger (pictured) has come under fire for seeking an advisory role on a science council set up by Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orbán, who has been strongly criticised for attacking academic freedom.

Oettinger left his Commission post in late 2019 and has said he would accept the unpaid role if the Commission deems it acceptable, the news website Politico reported on 26 February. Former commissioners and vice-presidents must seek approval for roles sought within a two-year “cooling off” period once they leave office, to avoid conflicts of interest.
