Academy says political influence over universities’ governance has contributed to slide in international rankings
The Science Academy of Turkey, an independent body founded in 2011 to promote scientific quality, freedom and integrity, has warned that the “politically motivated” appointment of leaders to Turkish universities is hampering research in the country and contributing to a “continuous and serious slide” in the universities’ standing in international rankings.
Five Turkish universities were among the top 500 universities in the world in 2018 according to a ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company specialising in education, but this fell to just one in 2020.
