Swiss national funder adopts gender quotas for boards

Women must make up at least 40 per cent of research councils and presiding board

The Swiss National Science Foundation has introduced gender quotas across its governing body and proposal evaluation bodies, with immediate effect.

On 5 February, the SNSF announced a December decision to require that men and women must each fill at least 40 per cent of the positions on its presiding board and research councils. Within its other evaluation bodies, it said the quota is set 20 per cent higher than the proportion of female professors in each specific field.
