European Parliament seeks hold on billions in Covid-recovery cash for R&D and other projects

The European Parliament has asked the European Commission to block billions of Euros for Hungary’s economic recovery from Covid until problems with academic freedom and other concerns in the country are addressed.

Hungary is due to receive €7.2 billion from the EU’s €723.8bn Covid recovery fund, which would be used for reforms and investments in areas including research and innovation. But the spending must be signed off by the Commission, and MEPs want it frozen until progress is made in a long-running row between Hungary and other countries over freedom and democracy.
