Mäkelä, Finnish academician, dies

Pirjo Helena Mäkelä, pioneer of national health work in Finland and the first woman in the country to receive the honorary title of Finnish Academician of Science from the Finnish President in 2003, passed away on 22 November.

Mäkelä is best known for the clinical research she and her group carried out that led to the development and widespread adaptation of the Hib conjugate vaccine, which prevents meningitis in children.
