Academics alarmed over research cuts

A lobby group for academics and students in Finland has issued a statement warning that government’s cuts in education and research funding could be worse than expected.

The statement was issued by Akava, the Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff. It said that it is hard to grasp the size of the cuts because they are made throughout different programmes for education and research.

Putting money into education should be as imperative as spending on healthcare and welfare, Akava states, and it would be unsustainable for the government to cut spending locally, as regional governments pay a large chunk of the educational expenditure. Making cuts without putting in resources will undermined the funding base, and the government must take responsibility over citizen rights, according to the statement.
