The Finnish government wants to boost R&D in environmentally responsible mining in reaction to the debate surrounding environmental problems caused by the country's mining industry.
Finland’s ministry of employment and the economy has presented a plan on how to make Finland the world leader in responsible mining. The report follows an environmental scandal at the mining complex Talvivaara in autumn 2012, which caused a heated debate on the sustainability of mining in the country.
The ministry’s report contains 35 measures, which, it says will make Finland a top sustainable mining country by 2030. These measures include better water management and communication about environmental hazards, while the public sector will try to create better financing conditions for the mining industry.
