Helsinki tops openness ranking

The University of Helsinki has been recognised as having the most open operational culture, according to an evaluation on open science.

The Open Science and Research in Finland report was published by the Finnish government on 22 November. It examines the level of openness in Finnish research organisations and funding agencies. The aim of the report was to establish a clear picture of current levels of openness, to evaluate progress since 2015, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and to identify areas in which support and cooperation are needed.

The report found that the University of Helsinki had reached the highest of five “openness” levels, calculated through indicators including: a collaborative working culture; including openness within the organisation’s strategy; well-defined policies for publication and copyright; a clear description of researchers’ rights and obligations regarding openness; promoting shared services; and introducing support services for measuring openness.
