Norway announces university mergers

The University of Stavanger is to merge with the Stord/Haugesund University College, and Buskerud University College will merge with Telemark University College, as part of ongoing changes to Norway's higher education system.

The mergers were announced by Norway’s research minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen in Bergen on 19 November. At the event, the minister also gave an update on plans to reform the country’s university structure, under which the government has said it intends to merge institutions to increase the quality of higher education.

As it stands, universities and university colleges have submitted their feedback ahead of a government white paper on the subject, said Isaksen. The government will use the submissions to develop its final strategy, which will be presented next spring.
