Norway’s research council, Forskningsrådet, is to cease funding high-level researchers who narrowly miss out on grants from the European Research Council, it has announced.
In a statement on 4 March, the council says that providing national support for unsuccessful applicants has not increased the number of Norwegians winning ERC funds, as it was intended.
“We have decided to terminate this funding scheme because we are uncertain that it has provided sufficient benefit overall,” said Anders Hanneborg, executive director of science at Forskningsrådet.
