The Norwegian government has reintroduced an initiative to bolster private gifts to universities for basic research with additional public funds.
The plans mean that donations above 3 million Norwegian kroner (€360,000) will be increased by a further 25 per cent, the national research council Forskningsrådet has announced. A total of kr50 million of public funds have been made available for this use.
The extra money will be available to any university or university college that can award doctoral degrees, says the Forskningsrådet. A similar initiative was in place between 2006 and 2011, during which around kr470 million kroner of state money was added to private donations.
