The Norwegian research council Forskningsrådet has said it intends to increase its funding for some of the country’s 50 research institutes, as part of a five-year strategy.
In a plan released on 31 March, the council says that the research institutes have an important role to play for R&D, meaning that support should be increased in departments with low funding allocations. The institutes, most of which do applied research, currently receive between 10 and 15 per cent of their total income from the council.
“The goal is to raise the quality and competitiveness of Norwegian institute sector,” said Forskningsrådet chief executive Arvid Hallén.
