Norway to push for tenure tracks

The Norwegian government is to trial a tenure track system at higher education institutions, with the aim of making more permanent positions available for researchers.

Under the initiative, the government will introduce a type of employment contract that ensures that researchers are eligible for a permanent position after a defined period, if sufficient standards are met. The research ministry is inviting higher education institutions to apply to test out the plans from spring 2015.

“This is an important contribution to getting good, young researchers from abroad and retain talent in Norway,” said research minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen in a statement. “The scheme will strengthen institutions’ opportunities to recruit talented young scientists and compete for the best candidates internationally.”
