Norway embraces the humanities

The humanities should feature more prominently in Norway’s major research programmes, a government white paper has said.

As it stands, humanities research isn’t included sufficiently in projects aiming to tackle major societal challenges such as immigration, automation and climate change, the white paper on humanities research, published by the research ministry on 31 March, said. Thematic and challenge-driven research calls should be more open to including humanities academics, it added.

“One of the goals of this paper is to connect the humanities more closely with the initiatives that already exist,” said Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, Norway’s research minister.
