Norway now has one minister for research and higher education and another for education and integration, after the government appointed a second representative to the department.
Iselin Nybø, a lawyer and former MP in the centrist Liberal Party, was appointed research and higher education minister on 17 January following a deal that saw the Liberal Party join the governing coalition. Jan Tore Sanner was moved from his job as minister of local government to be in charge of education and integration. Meanwhile Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, who has been responsible for both education and research until now, has relocated to become minister of trade and industry.
Although Nybø does not have experience in national government, she was the first vice-chair of the parliament’s Standing Committee on Education, Research and Church Affairs between 2013 and 2017. She was an MP for Rogaland county in western Norway during this time, and has also been a member of the Randaberg municipal council and the Stavanger city council. She has a law degree from the University of Bergen.
