EU-Russia year of science announced

The European Commission and Russia's education and science ministry have announced that they will cooperate on science throughout 2014.

According to an EU statement, the year will mark a “new era” of science and technology cooperation between the two regions, linked to the launch of the European Framework programme Horizon 2020 and the Russian State Programme.

"By joining forces, we can achieve significant results in priority areas such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and IT, electronics, transportation and space systems,” said Russia’s president Vladimir Putin in a letter to his assistant Andrei Fursenko. “I am convinced that the year of science will contribute to the successful solution of the problems of scientific, technological and cultural cooperation, as well as aiding the expansion of business and creative contacts."
