Russian MPs want GMO ban, state TV reports

A committee of MPs in Russia's lower house of parliament has requested a temporary ban on all genetically modified products in the country, according to the news channel Russia Today.

The agriculture committee’s call, reported in an RT online article on 26 February, has been backed by the country’s agriculture ministry. However, the ministry suggested that GM crops used in scientific research should be an exception.

Deputy agriculture minister Aleksandr Petrikov told MPs that the problem was a “lack of research into the various effects of GMO cultures, the absence of a working monitoring system and the fact that spreading of GMO crops could harm the biodiversity in whole regions”.
