Russia’s research funding gets more competitive

Russia is set to introduce a competitive grant scheme after years of national budgetary allocations for research being given directly to universities.

The research grants are part of a package of measures that have been approved by President Vladimir Putin, according to a report in University World News on 19 March.

As things stand, universities are allocated research funding that they in turn disburse to scientists. But Andrei Fursenko, assistant to the president and a former minister of education and science, says the system hasn’t been successful in turning Russia into a knowledge economy.
