Russia reacts to plagiarism scandal

Russia's government is to introduce a requirement for students to publish their dissertations and theses online, in an attempt to curb plagiarism and put an end to fake degrees.

The rules, which have been approved by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, have been created following a scandal involving Moscow State Pedagogical University last year.

Eleven people were found to have plagiarised their doctoral dissertations at the university. One of those was Andrei Andriyanov, a member of the ruling United Russia party who was appointed in January to head the elite Moscow-based Kolmogorov School for mathematics.
