The Ukrainian government has frozen the accounts of 30 Crimean research institutions, leaving them without cash to finance their research and day-to-day operations.
According to Vladimir Fortov, president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the funding that has been frozen includes grants from the European Union.
“As soon as the independence of the Republic of Crimea was announced, funding from Kiev immediately stopped. Institutions’ accounts are locked, which means they are losing not only money but also grants from commercial contracts and agreements in the framework of international cooperation. This is a serious problem,” Fortov told Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a Russian state newspaper, on 8 April.
