Russia plans ‘presidential’ scholarships

The Russian government is to launch a grant programme to support top scientists for a seven-year period.

In his annual address to the federal assembly on 1 December, president Vladimir Putin said that the measure would be a major tenet of his plans to boost the country’s scientific performance.

The so-called presidential scholars programme will give stability and long-term security to the country’s most successful researchers, Putin said.
