MEPs support connected infrastructures

The European Parliament has approved plans for a funding pot to improve European transport, energy and telecoms infrastructure links.

In a plenary vote on 19 November, the MEPs endorsed the Connecting Europe Facility, which provides the EU with joint funding and co-financing infrastructure projects. The programme is to have a total budget of €29.3 billion for 2014-20, of which €5.12bn has been set aside for modernising and expanding energy infrastructures.

Adina Valean, a Romanian MEP for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and a rapporteur on the CEF report, said in a statement that the EU should “maximise the use of the innovative financial instruments provided in CEF to attract private investments”.
