R&D helps broker German coalition

Research and higher education funding has contributed to shaping a deal between the social democrats and conservatives to form Germany's next government, agreed in Berlin on 26 November.

The coalition, between the SPD and the CDU, was hammered into form after the CDU reluctantly agreed to one of the SPD’s core demands: spending boosts for universities and R&D.

The future spending plan foresees a public budget boost of €5 billion for education, and €3bn for R&D activities, between 2014 and 2017. Increasing spending in these areas was one of several conditions the SPD presented as a basis of forming a government coalition.
