Italy names science minister

Maria Chiara Carrozza has been appointed the minister of education, universities and research as part of a newly formed government in Italy.

Carrozza, 47, is a professor in robotics at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and a member the center-left Democratic Party in the national parliament.

Her appointment follows the formation of a government from a grand coalition of center-left and center-right politicians, under the direction of prime minister Enrico Letta.
