The European Commission has published an action plan to revitalise the Atlantic Ocean as part of its overall plans to develop the "blue economy" of the sea.
The strategy, published on 13 May, includes plans for research into the farming of aquatic organisms, known as aquaculture, offshore renewable energy technologies and marine bioproducts including pharmaceuticals.
It also sets out plans to improve to ocean observation and ecosystem monitoring, including seabed mapping, and increase the availability of the data generated.
