A set of six focus areas for scientific data, called clusters, have been established by the European Commission in collaboration with representatives from countries in the Danube region.
The clusters focus on water, land and soil, bioenergy, air, data exchange and harmonisation, and smart specialisation. They have been launched as part of the EU’s Danube Strategy, which supports economic development and aims to address several challenges facing the region.
The clusters are intended to bring together members of the scientific community in the region’s 14 countries along with policy makers. The aim is to encourage scientific evidence to be used in policy-making in the region. Particular need for scientific input has been identified to meet a number of needs, including environmental protection, development of irrigation and agriculture, and energy. One planned outcome of the clusters’ activities is a central data access point, which should become available by the end of the year.
