Commission reshuffles as six take electoral leave

European Commission president José Manuel Barroso has granted six commissioners leave to campaign for their election to the European Parliament.

The six taking electoral leave include four Commission vice-presidents: Viviane Reding, responsible for justice, Antonio Tajani, responsible for industry, Maroš Šefčovič, responsible for inter-institutional relations, and Olli Rehn, responsible for economic affairs. Janusz Lewandowski and Neven Mimica, commissioners for financial programming and consumer policy, respectively, will also take electoral leave.

The six commissioners will take unpaid leave from mid-April, and will be unable to use the Commission’s human and material resources until they return following the final day of elections on 25 May. In the meantime, Barroso will take on Šefčovič’s portfolio, whilst commissioners Siim Kallas, Andris Piebalgs, Johannes Hahn, Michel Barnier and László Andor will cover for Rehn, Lewandowski, Reding, Tajani and Mimica, respectively.
