Former prime minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg is to take over as the secretary general of NATO, it has been announced.
Stoltenberg is a politician who has served as leader of the Norwegian Labour party from 2002 to 2014. He has held the position of prime minister twice, serving latterly from 2005 to 2011. He will take over from the current secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussenas from 1 October, it was announced on 28 March. His appointment has implications for other top jobs in the EU, since the position is one of several key jobs to be decided this year.
Observers have speculated that the decision could make the appointment of another leading Scandinavian politician Helle Thorning-Schmidt in another leading position unlikely. She had previously been tipped as a possible successor to José Manuel Barroso as president of the European Commission.
