Commission told off for lack of transparency on TTIP

The European ombudsman has opened a case against the European Commission for refusing access to documents related to the pending trade deal with the United States.

Last November, the Commission pledged to publish more documents relevant to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, in a move to increase transparency. However, according to the European ombudsman Emily O’Reilly, the Commission has failed to meet this commitment.

In a statement on 25 February, O’Reilly said that the Commission “failed to implement transparency in such a way as to allow citizens to make meaningful access to documents requests”. Among other allegations, O’Reilly said that the Commission has not provided access to documents “in a timely manner”.
